College Guild

Our Mission

We provide free correspondence courses that connect incarcerated people with a community beyond prison walls, fostering mutual respect through a shared passion for learning. Inmates participating in correctional education programs are 28% less likely to recidivate (Source).

College Guild has impacted the lives of thousands of incarcerated people.

Our Approach

Since 2001, we’ve offered free correspondence courses by mail for inmates across America.

What makes College Guild unique?

Accessible to All

We serve all incarcerated people, regardless of race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, prison, crime, or sentence.

By remaining non-accredited, we can serve students without a GED as well as those on death row, serving a life sentence, or in solitary confinement.

We are not affiliated with any religious or political group, and regularly evaluate our program to ensure representation and prevent biases.

Engaging Curriculum

Students complete courses covering a broad range of interests, including science and health, history and art, writing, and culture and society.

Multipart courses help students develop their interests and relieve the boredom of prison life.

Students work at their own pace, submitting assignments and receiving personalized responses by mail.

Personalized Responses

A legion of volunteer readers provides personalized responses to every assignment submitted.

For some students, College Guild readers are the only contact they have beyond the prison walls.

We maintain high standards for prompt, thought-provoking, and respectful responses. All communications pass through College Guild staff to ensure anonymity and protect the identities of students and volunteers.

* Students provide a pencil and paper, and an outgoing stamp (we are unable to send stamps due to restrictions at many prisons).

Testimonials

“Please know that you make me feel 'real.' That sounds stupid maybe, but to have someone want to really learn and to read something I put on paper made me remember my life before. For a while, I was who I once was, not a number, not a face, but the real Daniel. Thank you for that.”

– Daniel (Student)

“I've never thought of myself as a teacher. College Guild has shown me that I was wrong, that being a teacher is hard, but it is certainly worth it. It has taught me how valuable it is to teach others, to make the effort to know and share in the thoughts of someone else.”

– Z., High School Student (Volunteer Reader)

“When I left my family, I left behind a twisted ideology of myself. Sending home the assignments together with volunteer comments has helped me to reflect, and for my family to read and discern for themselves how much my core beliefs have changed.”

– Anonymous (Student)

“When I've had the opportunity to read successive units of work by the same writer, it is clear they are making real progress. That is rewarding to me. For me, this is not just a humanitarian project; it is also a very practical one, because it establishes a bridge to help released students return safely to their communities.”

– R., Retiree (Volunteer Reader)

“College Guild has helped me see myself in a new light and made me aware of possibilities that I didn’t know existed. The comments on my answers have opened a whole new world to me. College Guild has inspired me to desire a college education.”

– Joy (Student)

“College Guild, by treating incarcerated people with respect, conveys an essential message. By corresponding with students and helping them grow through a wide ranging curriculum...we might create new conditions by which they can re-enter the world and see new possibilities for living a fulfilling and productive life.”

– J., Newspaper Editor (Volunteer Reader)

“College Guild has been helping me since 2009, and they have shown me nothing but respect, kindness, and patience, something that has never been shown to me in my whole life. They have taught me that I can accomplish things and be a better person, and that people do care for us.”

– José (Student)

“I've received thank you letters and felt a real connection to the students. I don't know what their past was, but I'm sure College Guild is very different, and that as I discover their opinions and potential, so do they.”

– R., Retiree (Volunteer Reader)
